What to consider when building a swimming pool

It's a big decision and there are a number of things you'll need to consider.

Traps to look out for

  • Make sure any quotes include everything you'll need. You'll want a filter, a pool cover, to have excess soil removed from the property, you might want swimming pool lights and landscaping immediately surrounding the pool.
  • Access costs and timing. If access to your property is limited, this can seriously hamper your progress.
  • A pool near or under a tree can have problems from not only the tree roots but falling leaves.

The facts that may influence your decisions

  • Many above ground or fibreglass pools are of fixed dimensions and may not suit the space you have available. A concrete pool can be made to fit your area.
  • You'll need provision for heavy machinery to gain access to the site.
  • An in-ground pool will take longer to create, probably around 1-3 months. An above ground pool could take a few days at most. Remember that the longer the job will take, the more you'll likely pay for labour.
  • Many pools are best with a flat site. If you have a slightly sloping block, you'll need to factor in levelling an area, especially for an above ground pool.
  • A swimming pool fence is a legal requirement and something you'll definitely need to consider.
  • Above ground pools are cheaper and easier to install, but are subsequently viewed as cheap - this may impact the resale value of your house.
  • Any trees nearby? Roots can be a significant problem and you should site a pool away from any large trees, or have them removed where permitted or appropriate.
  • When it comes to heating, solar heating your swimming pool is cheapest, but gas or electricity are generally more effective.
