10 things every new cat owner should know

Maybe you've got a cat or you're thinking about getting one, but do you know the 10 most important things about your feline?

Top 10 things to know about choosing a cat

  1. Breed or moggie? It's really up to you. A moggie, though, is cheaper, easier to get and just as fun to keep.
  2. Cat or kitten? An older cat generally starts trained while a kitten will require more supervision as it grows.
  3. Desex your cat. Cats can be desexed after the age of eight weeks and should be desexed before they are four months old. Ensure that your cat or kitten is desexed to prevent unwanted kittens needing to be taken to already crowded shelters.
  4. Identify your cat! A microchip and collar tag with your phone number will go a long way towards preventing your cat from disappearing.
  5. Keep your cat indoors at night. Many cat fights occur at night and diseases and infections are spread in this way.
  6. Avoid feeding strays unless you plan to adopt them. Take them to a shelter rather than encouraging them to continue a life on the streets fighting for food.
  7. Keep your cat happy. Toys, scratching posts, hiding spots and more will keep your pet entertained at home.
  8. Ensure your cat's bowls and litter tray are kept clean. Cats are fastidious and have an acute sense of smell. They don't like messiness and the resulting odours much at all.
  9. Teach children to respect your cat. Annoying or teasing many cats will lead them to scratch in retaliation.
  10. Keep your cat healthy. Look out for fleas and treat your cat for worms. Also, make sure that your pet is immunised against the various issues that can arise such as feline enteritis and feline immunodeficiency (FIV or "Feline Aids").
